MTY Championing Mental Wellness:

Following some research that was done by MTY Trust, several young adults indicated in their responses that one thing they wish they were taught while they were younger was how to effectively manage their mental wellbeing.

MTY Trust, therefore, realises that most of the challenges adults face are a result lack of adequate mental health awareness and support during their formative years. This has given rise to the need to include mental health awareness training in the programs for children between the ages of 4 to 12 years old. The need to focus on mental health of children is gaining increasing momentum as the global community strives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 3: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” and SDG 10: “Reduce inequalities within and among countries”. With adolescents comprising 16% of the global population, it is vital to address the main threats to their health in order to achieve the SDG targets. Worldwide, 10-20% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders. Half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14 and three- quarters by the mid-20s. According to the Centre for Disease Control, 1 in 6 children aged 2 – 8 years has a mental, behavioural or developmental disorder. Behaviour problems are more common among children aged 6-11 years and sadly 75% of children and young people who experience mental health problems are not getting the help they need. Children with mental disorders face major challenges with stigma, isolation and discrimination, as well as lack of access to health care and education facilities, in violation of their fundamental human rights. Early intervention and mitigation have become an urgent requirement as this can go a long way in alleviating the impact of mental health challenges in children under the age of 12 hence saving the next generations.

MTY Trust therefore values the significance of Mental Wellness in its programmes, as good mental health allows children to think clearly, develop socially and learn new skills. Being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and how to cope when there are problems. In addition healthy diets , nutritious foods contribute to the wellbeing of children.
